Mother's Day...Wasn't SO Far Away!!

It's just not fair, I did a post about Mother's Day with my mom, but never found the time to chat about the Mother's Day I had with my kids.  It was a good one, so I want to remember it!!  Humor me...
Two of my kids had been on an all day Cedar Point trip the day before, so they got home late Saturday night.  Megan and her dad were left scrambling by themselves that Saturday.  How do I know this?  Well, because they asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day...and I saw their car at Kohl's as I was passing by on my way home from my mom's Mother's Day celebration.  It has become a running joke about the last minute stuff, and I don't think I would know what to do if it were any other way.  Actually, what I almost always ask for is peace and quiet and no kids arguing, etc.  The family has decided they would rather buy gifts -- just to be safe!!  Oh well, can't have everything, right!?
Probably the nicest surprise on Mother's Day was when my daughter, Megan, who just finished her sophomore year of high school, presented me with this lovely work of art she made in her German 2 class!  After all those years of receiving various cute gifts from all three of my kids in preschool and elementary school...this was an unexpected surprise and felt like we had come full circle in a way.  I have received similar works of art in English, but this was so sweet and I really love it!  She gave it with a disclaimer that it might not make sense because she had to use the MUTTER letters, etc.  Doesn't matter.  I love it and I'm not even totally sure what it says.  (If you know and it's a bunch of bad names...don't tell me!)

Love this!

One of my biggest wishes is always sleeping in...and I got to do that.  As a bonus. I woke up to this lovely breakfast spread.  This is our famous breakfast casserole that we have on special days quite a lot.  I got the recipe years ago from my aunt and will have to share it some day soon.  It's a keeper.  The best part -- I didn't make any of this!

Later, we opened some gifts.  The kids gave me a silver cross necklace and some fun colorful cups perfect for me to make my smoothies in.  I also got some Skechers Go Walk shoes which I was wanting to try.  They were perfect in the month of May when there were still many still chilly/rainy days when flip flops on the soccer field would not have worked (as much as I LOVE flip flops!).  They are lightweight, slip on, and comfortable.

Part of my dream day also involved doing a whole lot of nothing -- which the family seemed rather glad about.  I had been wanting to watch Les Miserables on DVD since I bought it at the end of March before our Florida trip.  Never did get to watch it.  Sooooo, I spent a good three hours on Mother's Day watching and sobbing to Les Miserables.  It was my first time seeing any version of it, and I loved it!!  I love Anne Hathaway and the cast was great!  The kids did a pretty good job of letting me watch it without interruption...until the end when they saw me sobbing, etc...  Then they also become interested and watched part of it, but at that point they had no idea what was really going on nor the reason their mom was sobbing!

Gosh, so far this Mother's Day was going well!!!  Sleep, food, gifts, a movie and a whole lot of nothing!  Oh, and I stayed in my pjs - didn't even get dressed!!  As dinner time was approaching, all ears were anxious to know what I would desire for dinner.  I was liking still having my pajamas on and really didn't want to go anywhere.  I half kiddingly mentioned how I could really go for my favorite sandwich....which can only be purchased about 40 minutes from our house!!!  My husband said he would go get it!!!!  I was stunned and excited!!  (Perhaps he was also craving one of their sandwiches??)

So, you see, I'm not all that hard to please...  It was a low key and happy Mother's Day for me thanks to the kids and my hubby!!!

Monday Memories With My Mom

The Adventures of Caring for a Mom With Alzheimer's Disease
Let's pretend it's still Monday...  I knew that the American House, where my is living was hosting a Mother's Day tea on the Saturday before Mother's Day.  Unfortunately, I was too late in responding to the invite (I felt bad...I was out of town) and it was already full.  I was still hoping we could all celebrate Mother's Day with my mom on Saturday so all of us (minus Megan who was volunteering at school) took my mom out to lunch.  OK, so we didn't take her to the fanciest place....it was Five Guys Burgers and Fries!  We were on a tight schedule and I knew her friend had just taken her to Olive Garden the day before.  Besides, just getting out is the fun!
First, we brought Grandma a potted flower arrangement for her balcony, a new (Jennifer Lopez!) nightgown and some new pillows!  She was happy.  We also had lots of fun at Five Guys and my kids love "playing" with their pop machines and getting all of us pop (Diet Coke in every flavor).

It happened that the conversation of the day revolved around two things. My mom mentioned numerous times that they have a computer room in her building and that she is going to go on ancestry.com and search her family name. Again, and again, and again. We told her she should do a commercial. There was a time when she was emailing and doing some basic computer things. It is amazing how certain things "stick" in her mind. We assured her that we would also be checking ancestry.com.
The other thing was a story that the exercise room in her building used to be a swimming pool and how she and everyone else wishes it still was. I am not sure if this "fun fact" is true, but I guess it is possible... (Can you imagine the liability?) Kristin told her many times that she was glad it wasn't a pool so that she wouldn't get hurt.
After an hour and a half of ancestry.com and the swimming pool story with various diversions we tried to mix in, we were on our way.
Kristin, Megan and I ended up stopping by for another visit on Mother's Day. Megan had not been in awhile so I thought we would make another quick visit. I was glad to see my mom was standing out on her balcony taking in the nice day. We had a nice visit, talked about ancestry.com again, etc... Somehow, we also got on the subject of pets at which time my mom admitted that she would like to get a big bird cage and have a pet chipmunk!!!   We got a good laugh out of that. Admittedly, they are cute little things and we do happen to have several sneaking in our garage on a daily basis, but can you imagine caging a chipmunk!!??
Thankfully, my mom knew it was not realistic, just what she would like!!   No matter the topic of the day, where we are or what we are doing, we still love my mom and the kids love their grandma.  She remains in a good place, upbeat and happy!!

Gifts from the Heart For Mother's Day...

Although Mother's Day has come and gone, I thought I would share the goodies the kiddies showered me with on Sunday.  We had a relaxing family day with a nice breakfast casserole and fresh fruit, watched my boys cut the grass, and only had one soccer game with dinner at a Mexican restaurant afterward (I had been kind of craving Mexican since Cinco de Mayo so that's what we had)!
The kids do put a a lot of thought and time into Mother's Day and it's fun to hear the whispers and wrapping paper and tape flying around the house during the week.  The doors slamming and the "don't go in my room".  I appreciate the love that went into it all.  Megan went all out with the photo collage/shadowbox frame and I love the little duct tape roses that Kristin makes, too.  Sometimes I think they all just want to see who can make me cry....they find that very funny!!!  Jacob, well he's not really into arts and crafts -- but he vacuumed out my car and helped cut the grass!!  Sometimes it's pretty neat what your kids can do as they get older!!  Love those guys!!
Left to Right:
  • A photo collage/shadowbox frame made by my daughter, Megan
