Chicago...My Kind of Town

Back in August (don't judge my tardiness...remember I'm determined to catch up on stuff not related to my mom), on a Tuesday night, my husband randomly says...  Remember how I wanted to take Jake to a Tiger game in Chicago?  Well, they're playing tomorrow and I'm thinking of going.  Say whaaaaat?  I mean, I can be as spontaneous as the next person, but really!?
To review, we did not go on a family vacation this past summer.  The closest thing was probably spending part of 4th of July weekend up north.  I don't think I ever went into this, but Megan had to take a "Personal Fitness" class from 8am-12 noon for the first six weeks of the summer.  Monday thru Friday and could not miss a class.  See, you may find, like we did, that if your kid happens to take a foreign language class and is in music, their schedule does not allow for the personal fitness requirement.  Thus, we got to pay for a summer class, drive her to it, and be stuck here for six weeks...  Lucky us!!  Then, of course, band and football start in August, Megan started a job in June, the husband was tearing up our deck and rebuilding (still is!) and for those reasons and more we were close to home all summer.
So, because I was stir crazy I said if you're going then me and the girls are going, too!!!  After making last minute dog sitting arrangements with our neighbor, getting Megan excused from marching band, and my husband getting game tickets on Stub Hub, we kind of had a plan.
We left super early (like 4 or 5 am) to drive the 5 plus hours to Chicago and make it by game time.  We did stop for a quick breakfast and coffee on the road at the famous...Cracker Barrel!!

Both of my husband's sisters used to live in Chicago.  One still does.  My husband and I have been to Chicago many times, but I realized rarely have we gone in the summer.  Family holiday visits were typically in the Fall and Winter it seems.  I was scrambling to try to come up with a plan to make sure me and the girls got to see the maximum amount of stuff in the minimum amount of time.  I made a list in the car that included things like "The Bean", Michigan Avenue, Lakeshore Drive, deep dish pizza, Garretts popcorn, the Apple store and shopping...  No art, science, museums or aquariums this trip...

We arrived by 1pm and parked right in the center of the city and the boys took the "L" to Cellular Field for the game.

Our first stop was Millennium Park.  Interestingly, my girls are always up for a "photo shoot".  We had a beautiful day and the park was active and pretty!!

Meanwhile, the boys were sending us some shots of their fun at the baseball game.  The Tigers ended up winning that game and they had a great time!!!

Our first time taking some shots at "The Bean" (Cloud Gate)!!  Can you tell I don't do "selfies"

all the time, but some of us know exactly how to do it!!!!

We walked and we shopped and the girls got some clothes.  We
couldn't even resist stopping at this downtown Target which was also a lot of fun!!

Garrett Popcorn was also on our list and we had not eaten since breakfast.  I remembered Oprah (my bff?) talking about it and when we finally got there it did not disappointment!!  Yummy fresh carmel corn and cheese popcorn!!  This place probably always has a line, but it moved fairly quickly and was not too long when we were there.  Took a bunch of popcorn home and munched on some at Starbucks while we waited for the boys to meet up with us.
Throughout the day we had been texting my husband's sister who had no idea we were in town.  Her office overlooks Millennium Park and luckily, she was able to suggest a pizza place and meet up with us for dinner.  I think it was Pizano's...  There's a couple of good ones.  She said she has actually gone on a "pizza tour" through Chicago before where they got to sample from each place.  Pizano's was her preference and it was good!!  It was nice to catch up with her -- the kids love their Aunt Jill!!

We knew that 8 pm was our witching hour.  That would get us back home by around 2 am.  My husband had to work the next day (believe it or not) and the kids also had some commitments.  That's what happens with poor planning!!!!
However, our seven spontaneous hours in Chicago were a lot of fun -- and it was nice to hang out with my girls for awhile!!!!
Chicago -- we'll be back -- and this time Mom will plan the trip!!!

Outta My Mind

Random Tidbits Straight From My Little Brain
As you may or may not have noticed, I've been struggling to get some posts together.  There's plenty going on...just lacking in making the time!!  In the meantime, here's what's on my mind...

The other day, my 15 year old daughter said, "Can we get a German exchange student?" in the same way one might say, "can we have pizza for dinner".  I laughed and said, "oh sure, would you like a girl or guy student?"  She said "either one" (how accommodating!).  Truth is, I've actually thought about participating in the exchange program.

I'm not a big fan of running errands when the temp is in the 20s or lower.  Yep, 30s is actually tolerable (almost warm) for most of us who have always lived in Michigan.

OK, was Tierra on The Bachelor REALLY faking the whole time...or did she just drag out her hypothermia incident??  Either way, she's gotta go, right!?

I'm excited for the movie "Identity Thief" to come out tonight/tomorrow. I might even sneak away to see it tomorrow morning.  I am hoping for a brainless movies that makes me laugh...ya know...no deep plot or confusing characters to follow!!

My husband's birthday is Sunday. He's the only one in our family NOT having a "milestone" birthday this year, but I think he still likes presents...probably should get some and hope he's not reading this!!

Speaking of husband, he sent me a message yesterday that we have a dinner reservation at my favorite restaurant on Valentine's Day!  That has literally never happened before (over a week before Valentine's Day!!??), and I have accepted even though it's going to make my attempts at healthy eating a challenge!!

My new favorite app is "What's the Word??"... I would never know of these apps if it weren't for my kids...they're on top of all of that stuff!!  What's your favorite??

Level 20: LUCK

Speaking of apps, I recently got on Instagram and am really liking it.  Much less time consuming than Facebook.  Unfortunately, I can't get any of my "over 40" friends to join (you know who you are -- your age is showing)!!!  Follow me @Cindy24seven!!!

Anyone else feel the need to organize everything!!  The closets, pantry, laundry room, garage, basement...except I have no patience and don't know where to start!!

We are currently under a Winter Weather Advisory here...my kids are praying for a snow day!!  Honestly, I am praying for a school day!!  My kids had one two day week and two four day weeks since the beginning of 2013...and next week is their last week before winter break!  Feels like Christmas break just ended -- go to school already
so I can organize some stuff!!!

Reflecting on 2012 on New Year's Day...

Well, I may be a day late (and a dollar short), but this ol' blog helps me reflect on the days, weeks, months, and now even years gone by.  Although I haven't been as disciplined about capturing everything I would like, I do love all the connections I have made, pictures I would not have otherwise taken, and memories captured here.  I am definitely going to keep at it!!
2012 was a good year and a pretty busy year.  Here are some highlights:
We went on a family trip to the Scottsdale and Sedona, Arizona areas which I blogged about hereWe love Arizona and had a great time!!
There were, of course, several things that came up with regard to my mom and caring for her.  One of the more alarming days was when I picked her up for a doctor's appointment and found what she had done to her hair.  I am sure my blood pressure was through the roof that day.  Then, there was the call I received when she fell and was taken to the hospital while I was up north with my family.  That was scary and has a sense of deja vu to it.  I think a lot of us remember this past summer as being especially HOT HOT HOT!!  We got a surprise call that the power was out at my mom's senior apartment complex, so Grandma came over for a sleepover with us and we helped her "keep cool".  We were also very happy to celebrate her one year anniversary of living at her senior living apartment.  There were times we were not sure it would work.
I was proud and lucky enough to travel to Orlando, FL to see Megan perform with the high school marching band at the Magic Kingdom at Disney World.  It was a fun getaway and a once in a lifetime trip for Megan.  Megan also survived her freshman year of high school and hasn't looked back.  She also took driver's ed and is driving with a permit.  She was very busy with soccer, marching band and her heavy class load.
Jacob and Kristin turned 12 in June and had a small celebration with some friends.  They survived their first year of middle school, played soccer, volleyball, and football, and kept good grades during an extra busy fall.
We did not get to our place up north as much as we would have liked.  However, we did have a great time when we did as shown here and here.
The highlight of our summer was traveling to the East Coast for a family visit.  The weather was noticeably cooler and more bearable and we all had a great time!!
All of the kids and the parents were exceptionally busy during September and October.  The past four months have gone by super fast.  You can always check out what Megan was up to.  Megan remains a very responsibly student.  She loves anything to do with One Direction (obsessed) or music and her friends from school.  Jacob kept busy, too and enjoyed his first year of middle school football.  He has developed quite a sense of humor and I am enjoying watching him become a young man who is also smart, polite and sensitive.  Kristin is always happiest hanging out with friends, but kept super busy with soccer and volleyball this past fall.  She is kind hearted, diplomatic, and has become quite creative with her arts and crafts this past year.  We laugh together a lot!
Once November hit, things really went by fast preparing for the holidays, going to concerts, a visit from my mother-in-law, and some post season football games.  It's all been quite a ride and we look forward to a clean slate in 2013 and making the most of all the new year has to offer!!!
Looking forward to following you on your journey, too!!

Outta My Mind

Here's another edition of "Outta My Mind"...(very) random things...outta my mind.....
  • Yes, I have followed through on my goal of cooking  my dinners from Pinterest recipes this week!  Probably be sharing that tomorrow.
  • Tonight, round two of parent teacher conferences.  Last night we were at the high school (Megan), tonight middle school (Jacob and Kristin).  (Those 5 minute time slots are going to be a bit crazy!)
  • My heart is in a small town in Indiana today...a childhood friend of mine lost her husband to cancer after a 15 month battle.  Wish she wasn't 8 hours away...
  • You know how it feels when you get your "hopes" up...and it doesn't work out?  The Tigers, the Presidential race.  That's life, right?
  • My "painter" (husband) is heading towards our third weekend of our family room being in shambles...I hope he gets the trim done this weekend so we can put the room back together.
  • Proud of all three of my kids report cards the first marking period.  Everyone has a 3.5 GPA or above.  Megan is taking two AP (college level) courses as a sophomore...intense!  With their extracurricular schedule...it is amazing what they were able to accomplish!!
  • It's my brag blog and I can brag if I want to!!??  (to the tune of..."It's My Party and I Can Cry If I Want To")
  • I dragged my husband to Kohl's last night to get a new mattress topper with my 30% off coupon.  They were 50% off and then the coupon (which I forgot at home) and they still gave me my 30% off 'cause they have excellent customer service!!  Oh, and I especially loved when another lady in line "gasped" when the sales clerk said, "you saved $500 something" and earned $50 in Kohl's cash"!!!  (Ding, ding, ding...who needs the casino!?)
  • I might have talked too long to Megan's music director at conferences last night!!?  I LOVE her and she's hilarious.  Megan secretly said, "c'mon mom, she already likes me"!  (Megan only happened to be there for her private lesson...was not part of other conferences.)
  • My kids have all "emailed" me their Christmas lists (at my request).  Some of them were sent back with a note saying "there will not be any Apple electronic products given this year".  (Don't feel bad for them, they all got an iPod Touch last year and are not deprived in any way!)
Apparently, I had a lot on my mind, but now I'm off to conferences.
  What's on your mind?????
