Chicago...My Kind of Town

Back in August (don't judge my tardiness...remember I'm determined to catch up on stuff not related to my mom), on a Tuesday night, my husband randomly says...  Remember how I wanted to take Jake to a Tiger game in Chicago?  Well, they're playing tomorrow and I'm thinking of going.  Say whaaaaat?  I mean, I can be as spontaneous as the next person, but really!?
To review, we did not go on a family vacation this past summer.  The closest thing was probably spending part of 4th of July weekend up north.  I don't think I ever went into this, but Megan had to take a "Personal Fitness" class from 8am-12 noon for the first six weeks of the summer.  Monday thru Friday and could not miss a class.  See, you may find, like we did, that if your kid happens to take a foreign language class and is in music, their schedule does not allow for the personal fitness requirement.  Thus, we got to pay for a summer class, drive her to it, and be stuck here for six weeks...  Lucky us!!  Then, of course, band and football start in August, Megan started a job in June, the husband was tearing up our deck and rebuilding (still is!) and for those reasons and more we were close to home all summer.
So, because I was stir crazy I said if you're going then me and the girls are going, too!!!  After making last minute dog sitting arrangements with our neighbor, getting Megan excused from marching band, and my husband getting game tickets on Stub Hub, we kind of had a plan.
We left super early (like 4 or 5 am) to drive the 5 plus hours to Chicago and make it by game time.  We did stop for a quick breakfast and coffee on the road at the famous...Cracker Barrel!!

Both of my husband's sisters used to live in Chicago.  One still does.  My husband and I have been to Chicago many times, but I realized rarely have we gone in the summer.  Family holiday visits were typically in the Fall and Winter it seems.  I was scrambling to try to come up with a plan to make sure me and the girls got to see the maximum amount of stuff in the minimum amount of time.  I made a list in the car that included things like "The Bean", Michigan Avenue, Lakeshore Drive, deep dish pizza, Garretts popcorn, the Apple store and shopping...  No art, science, museums or aquariums this trip...

We arrived by 1pm and parked right in the center of the city and the boys took the "L" to Cellular Field for the game.

Our first stop was Millennium Park.  Interestingly, my girls are always up for a "photo shoot".  We had a beautiful day and the park was active and pretty!!

Meanwhile, the boys were sending us some shots of their fun at the baseball game.  The Tigers ended up winning that game and they had a great time!!!

Our first time taking some shots at "The Bean" (Cloud Gate)!!  Can you tell I don't do "selfies"

all the time, but some of us know exactly how to do it!!!!

We walked and we shopped and the girls got some clothes.  We
couldn't even resist stopping at this downtown Target which was also a lot of fun!!

Garrett Popcorn was also on our list and we had not eaten since breakfast.  I remembered Oprah (my bff?) talking about it and when we finally got there it did not disappointment!!  Yummy fresh carmel corn and cheese popcorn!!  This place probably always has a line, but it moved fairly quickly and was not too long when we were there.  Took a bunch of popcorn home and munched on some at Starbucks while we waited for the boys to meet up with us.
Throughout the day we had been texting my husband's sister who had no idea we were in town.  Her office overlooks Millennium Park and luckily, she was able to suggest a pizza place and meet up with us for dinner.  I think it was Pizano's...  There's a couple of good ones.  She said she has actually gone on a "pizza tour" through Chicago before where they got to sample from each place.  Pizano's was her preference and it was good!!  It was nice to catch up with her -- the kids love their Aunt Jill!!

We knew that 8 pm was our witching hour.  That would get us back home by around 2 am.  My husband had to work the next day (believe it or not) and the kids also had some commitments.  That's what happens with poor planning!!!!
However, our seven spontaneous hours in Chicago were a lot of fun -- and it was nice to hang out with my girls for awhile!!!!
Chicago -- we'll be back -- and this time Mom will plan the trip!!!

Oh...Happy Anniversary!!!!

Awhile back, I remember sharing that this year was going to be particularly filled with family "milestones".  Well, the first one took place May 1st.  My husband and I celebrated 20 years of marriage wedded bliss...  He took the day off of work so we could be "together".

  never said it better :0

I We had decided to celebrate by updating our "look" and getting new wedding bands.  This is something I never dreamed of doing before as I am quite sentimental when it comes to certain things.  The symbolic exchange of wedding rings and vows is definitely one of them.  Well, nothing like the passing of 20 years to make a person change their thinking on all kinds of things!!  Besides, these days I am liking the platinum, silver, white gold look more than our original gold wedding bands.  We did not replace the rings, just have two choices available to us now.  Also, my husband never rarely wore his ring because somehow in our young love and innocence we did not get him a "comfort fit" band and he found the old ring "annoying" (how's that for symbolism!!???) and generally dislikes jewelry.

May 1, 2013 -- 20 Years
(This Photo will have to do -- I will never get cooperation for a "retake")
We went to lunch together at a favorite place and then got some fro-yo at our new Menchies.  Not long after that, it was back to reality.  The kids were going to be home from school and there was a football meeting at the school that night  (back to reality).
We have been through a lot together in these 20 years, both good times and bad -- yet  we are still together!!!  We have discussed a weekend getaway to celebrate, but so far our calendar has not really allowed it!!!  In the meantime....let's all join hands and sing out this post with our wedding song from 20 years ago by the late great Luther Vandross.........

Always and forever, each moment with you
Is just like a dream to me that somehow came true
And I know tomorrow will still be the same
'Cause we've got a life of love that won't ever change and
Everyday love me your own special way
Melt all my heart away with a smile
Take time to tell me you really care
And we'll share tomorrow together
I'll always love you forever, forever

There'll always be sunshine when I look at you
It's something I can't explain just the things that you do
And if you get lonely phone me and take
A second to give to me that magic you make and
Everyday love me your own special way
Melt all my heart away with a smile
Take time to tell me you really care
And we'll share tomorrow together
I'll always love you ever, ever

Loving you is the thing that I've planned
For a very long time
Me with you, you with me, we as one
Love together for a very long time
Loving you, you, baby
Always, forever love you
Always, forever love you
Always, forever love you
I said, "Forever love you, love you"
Ever and the day and one day
Loving you, you, you, you, you
Forever, tomorrow's tomorrow
Ever and a day, ever and a day
Ever, everyday, yeah, you
Loving you forever, ever, you, you
Forever

Our Boldest Pinterest Project...EVER!!!

You may recall awhile back the post I did where my husband got our family room painted.  That has since also evolved into our upstairs hallway and foyer.
I saw this on Pinterest and am not sure I would have put it on our "to do" list if it wasn't for how dramatically different the Before and After pictures were.  I liked it and all these months later, we (ok, mostly my husband) are wrapping up this dramatic door makeover.
I guess this may not be for everyone, but I am loving it!  It brings a depth element to the overall look.  Plus, it's just a nice change!!
Meanwhile, I am so behind on keeping you peeps updated on this ol' bloggy scrapbook of mine.  I am not going to make excuses (I have a million), but I will say we have been keeping busy and getting a lot done around here.  For those who have asked, my mom is still hanging in there and hopefully I will give an update on Monday.
This was inspired by Pinterest and for us was definitely more of a game changer than a recipe or craft project!!   What is your boldest Pinterest project ever???

**The pictures don't do it justice, but you guys don't want to wait another month for a post do ya???

Painting...and Patience

If you have been following along, you may remember I mentioned my husband painting our family room.  In fact, I said I "tricked" him into it.  Ha!  He later said, "ya know I read your blog".
The real story is...this room had a gross color (and yes I picked it over ten years ago when I assume I was in some kind of pregnancy coma!?).  Of course, I have been hinting about repainting it for...years!  Many times I would mention that we could hire it done.  To which Mr. Living (it cracks me up when bloggers refer to their husbands this way) would say "go ahead".  Well, deep down I knew he didn't mean this, but maybe he did??  Finally, it was time to take matters into my own hands!  I found the color I wanted, got a sample, tried it out on the wall, and researched four painters I was prepared to call for quotes.  (I also might have mentioned to my husband that I hoped those painters would be "young and hot cute").  I asked my husband if he wanted to be part of the hiring process.  Soon after, he said "I'll paint".  I jokingly told him I would "give him a try" on the family room only (my real plans include the kitchen, foyer, stairway, and second floor hallway, not a small job).

In the beginning...
I must say, my "painter" has been quite diligent.  The room has been in a bit of chaos for two weeks, however, it is now relatively put back together.  If "my painter" can finish cleaning up and help me hang a few things back on the wall -- I may just hire him for the next phase of this painting project!  In the meantime, thank you for taking on this project (and thank you for letting me share this with all of you in hopes that my husband reads my blog)!!  Wink, wink.
Hoping to have a full room photo after we get some final touches taken care of.*

The Process...

I know, my captions are backwards.  Lighting makes SUCH a difference with color, doesn't it?

Halloween 2012

I wasn't going to post about Halloween 2012.  My kids are older...the cuteness is somewhat gone.  We barely carved two pumpkins...on Halloween day after school.
However, at the last minute ALL of my "kids" decided to go trick or treating.  The only one who planned to all along was Kristin, the kitty cat.  I did not make bloody finger cocktail weenies, or float an iced hand in punch, or bake pumpkin seeds...or any of those things.  I was actually a little embarassed shocked that my 15 year old went out.  I am quite sure this was finally her last year.  She knows I thought it was a bit much...and only a very small percentage of her friends went.  Thus, the last minute "costumes".
We had a total of 25 kids at our door this year.  Ever since they built subdivisions adjoining ours...with sidewalks and houses closer together...everybody goes over there.  More bang for your trick or treat mile. Plus, we live in a cul-de-sac so apparently nobody wants to bother much anymore...  When we moved in 15 year ago, we got over 100 kids...everybody's growing up!!
Yeah, I got him this shirt on clearance last year...

It was a pretty quiet and subdued Halloween.  I drank my Witches Brew wine and had some leftover Fritos.  The years of school parties, passing out the cute little favors I used to put together, putting major thought, planning and money into costumes.  Well, those days are over.  I would like to have a Halloween party for some of the kids next time Halloween falls on a Friday.  Movies, treats, costumes, carmel apple bar,  bonfire kind of thing.  That would be fun!!!
What age do you think is too old for trick or treating?  I remember wanting to give a midget tootsie roll to the big high schoolers who just wore their football jerseys...  Now that my kids are older...I kind of get that some of them want to drag out their childhood as long as possible.  Who am I to say??

A Quick (Couples) Getaway

Things have been busy and I have some blogging to catch up on, but my husband and I were lucky enough to go on a little getaway last night!!  My friend Donna and our friend Nancy were planning to have a "Girl's Night" at the MGM Grand Hotel/Casino in Detroit this week.  Unfortunately, Donna, who "earned" the free night's stay, could not make it at the last minute.  So, long story short, she offered the room to George and I as she was not able to reschedule.  With the kids being older and not in school yet, we were somehow able to swing it with a lot of support from some other moms (thanks Lisa and Monica) who watched out for the kids!!
Donna was able to hang out for a bit and check us into our room yesterday evening!!  What a great friend, right!!??  She also left us champagne and her own Donna kind of love notes around the room.  She's hilarious and that's one of the reasons we love her so much!!!  Although I have gone on several Girl's Nights  to the casino, I have never stayed there with my husband before...
We had a nice dinner, did some gambling, and just relaxed and chatted without the distraction of the kids or being in a rush.  We were not big winners at the tables or slots, but I think George came out a few dollars ahead!!  My girlfriends know I'm all about the hotel and less about the casino!!   What a great place for people watching, though!!  I hope my jaw didn't drop too many times, and if I thought it was appropriate, I would have taken some pictures of some of the people.  I just wonder, are they from Michigan, do they come here all the time, are they hotel guests, do they have to go to work tomorrow, do they have a lot of money to gamble away, etc????
Thanks, Donna, for making our stay extra special in your own "special" way!!
Today we ended up going to a part of Detroit called Mexicantown to go to an old favorite (dive) restaurant of ours, Xochimilco, for some yummy fresh chips and salsa and lunch.  Although this is not the best neighborhood of Detroit, I felt fairly comfortable going during the day.  I am not sure, in my old age, if I would go there at night, but me and my friends used to visit there fairly often "back in the day".  The food did not disappoint and I know my husband has been craving it for quite some time.  Good stuff!!
It was nice to have some time as a couple -- wish we could do it more often.  Who knows, maybe we finally can now that the kids are getting older!?  If you live around here, have you ever gone to Mexicantown??  Which is your favorite place to go??

Love a fancy bathroom -- with flat screen tv!

Apparently, this is necessary to someone!?

I would love a shower this nice...it's actually bigger than it looks in this pic!

And those little touches from my BFF, Donna!

We're Back after a few years -- for our Mexican fix!!
